Epic Fiberglass fly rod blank review from Peter Emmel of Renaissance Rods USA

August 06, 2013 2 min read

Custom Fiberglass Fly Rod blank"Why does “Renaissance Rods” opt to build on “Epic” glass? Four words: Selection, Strength, Accuracy & Quality.

When I was first approached by Carl about trying the new “Epic” fiberglass blanks, I was skeptical. Why would Carl want a small shop like mine to try out their blanks? After looking at their web site and exchanging several e-mails, I jumped at the opportunity to give them a go. Haven’t looked back since.

SPINING A FLY ROD - TO SPINE OR NOT TO SPINE

July 02, 2013 3 min read

  • Fly rod blanks tend to naturally want to bed more in one direction that another. This is caused by an effect called the “Spine” and often there is more than one on a blank. The spine is a result of the manufacturing process and is the location of the join or overlap of a graphite or glass flag as it is rolled around the mandrel.
  • Basically it is a slightly thicker section in the tube wall. This thick section is slightly stiffer than the rest of the tube and presents a greater resistance to bending. (Blanks that use helical wound construction tend not to exhibit a pronounced spine)

Epic 990 Review & Build from Snowman Custom Rod Works

July 01, 2013 4 min read

9 weight Fiberglass Fly Rod"I am really impressed with the Epic 990 profile. It seems like nobody builds a high weight rod for small water 30 pound king salmon. This profile would be ideal. I often find myself caught up in powerful seven and higher weight rods that can generate more line speed than Indiana Jones whip, but has the feel of construction grade rebar. This rod is a mix of both and it's performance is STUNNING.

An Epic Day

January 30, 2013 1 min read

Things have been incredibly busy of late. Designing the Epic fly rod blanks and getting them to market seems to have been all consuming. There's been little time for fly fishing, but given that we've had such a bad run of summer weather I don't really feel like I've missed out on too much.

That all changed this week with a run of perfect weather and the arrival of fly fishing mate and fellow casting intructor Simon Zarifeh.

It was the perfect opportunity to get out of the office and take the new "So Blue" Epic 686 and the Lunar fly reel prototype out for a spin.

Fantastic fun, here's a bunch of pics.
