A rod on a whim, then on a river..EpicReference 4wt 476 FastGlass
There I was with a few hours to kill near Wanaka over Christmas and don't you know I just had to visit the Epic HQ on a whim while family went shopping for NZ possum fur sweaters in town. I took out the rod to a grassy lot across from the shop and cast on a pretty windy day. I didn't really know what to expect with a glass 4 wt with a DT line. Well. It cast beautifully, into the wind, and I was impressed with how well it loaded and how much distance I could get -- I'm a decent caster but easily got 40 ft out, which is most of what I need for rivers in New England. It's softer than many rods and I had to adjust a little but it was a pleasure to cast. Delicate in some ways I suppose, but I know it can handle decent fish...more about that in a second. The rod is lovely to behold, a delight to cast. I like the reel sit and the reel that I bought in the combo package. I took the rod out for a trial in a nearby Clutha River and with a wooly indicator and size 16 damselfly nymph surprised myself with a 16" fat brown. The rod handled this trout wonderfully. My Connecticut rivers tend to be smallish, but I am sure this rod will do me well with on the Farmington when I'd like something with a bit of finesse on dry fly days. It's a 4 wt, yes, but I think it would feel fine with a 3 or 5 wt line. I'll give that a try some day, ie one the snow back in New England melts.
