Delivers the toughest exterior finish possible. After production, blanks are first painted and then clear coated. This two step process produces blanks that are incredibly scratch resistant and durable.
This is the second rod building kit I've purchased (previous was the 6 wt fastglass) and the build is more fun and enjoyable than the first. Quality components and clear, easy to follow instructions. Looking forward to using this rod to target bonefish and redfish. Outstanding customer service and great value!
Epic’s kits introduced me to rod-building, and I learned by building, I think, six Epic rods. I’ve since built several more rods, using blanks and components from other vendors that have come pretty highly recommended on various rod building forums. There’s no comparison. I fish 8 wts, wading Tampa Bay flats, so after building the 890C I’ve built several more 8 wts thinking that by picking and choosing my own components I could build a rod comparable to Epic’s at a better price point. I can’t. The Epic blank is lighter, slenderer and more accurate (“tighter” comes to mind) than any other blank I’ve yet sourced for the money. I’ve about concluded that there’s no point in looking further. For the money I can’t do better. Great blanks.
Just finished this build. It follows the 888, Boca Grande, Bandit and FastGlass 686. On a recent guided trip to Boca Grande I had a great time with the 888 and caught many fish of several species (alas nothing big enough to bend it deep). But when it came time to bang the mangrove edges I turned to the guide's 8wt Orvis Recon because I was able to more consistently get my fly in tight to the roots. The Orvis-endorsed guide asked with a grin "so when are you getting a Recon?" My thought, unspoken, was "I'm going to build an Epic 890C". Well, I now have and I can't wait to get it out to the backwater flats of Tampa Bay, where I live. Building these 5 kits has been an enormous pleasure and it's given me confidence in the basics of rod-building. I do wish that I could continue with Epic/Swift in the future as I plan to be purchasing my components separately, developing the knowledge to select blanks, match seats and handles to rod butts, spec/size/place guides and tips, et cetera. Alas, Epic does what it does fantastically well, but it can't be all things and it isn't a rod-building components retailer. If there were one R2W kit I'd like to see added, it's a 10ft 8wt Great Lakes "steelhead" rod. Thanks, Epic. I wish I could justify building more than just 5 of your kits! Now, what do I do with all this ProPaste and black and white thread??
Another great build, very close to finishing my 890C. My wife is pretty happy because after three rod builds she can have the lounge room back. I've really enjoyed the build, my favourite so far. Great kit as usual and wonderful customer support from Adam. Now let's hope the Queensland border stays open so I can get there from Canberra and try the rod and my new Harfin reel out.
What a beautifully produced product this is, with clear, easy instructions on how to build. Love the finished rod, hoping it’ll give me many years of chasing Scottish sea trout!
