The subject of spining rods has & continues to cause huge debate. The truth is that under the tension of the cast the rod will always bend according to the tension of the fly line against the guides and tiptop, the effect of the spine on a fully loaded rod is negligible. - So truly, it matters little (all respect to the great Don Green)

I know this is an older post, but question for the author.. I like the idea of the guides 90 degrees off the spine. I’m getting ready to build a 4 piece fly rod and am considering alternating the spine from one side to the other, so that the finished rod, held in the hand in a normal position (guides on the bottom) and starting from the butt section, the spine would be right side, left side, right side, and left side. Do you think this configuration would have any negative or positive affects.

I think you’ve got a couple of things backwards; placing the guides on the spine’s side will not produce a stiffer forward cast. “Place the guides on the inside of the curve – the weaker side. By placing the guides on the inside of the curve you will get (marginally) better lifting power, as you will be pulling against the spine or natural curve of the blank.” Wouldn’t you be pulling against the softer side, it’s natural curve which is weaker than putting pressure against not down upon the spine?

Which option should I choose when building a spey rod, particularly for skagit casting? It is multi dimensional cast so I do not know which axis of the blank would be effective.
