Delivers the toughest exterior finish possible. After production, blanks are first painted and then clear coated. This two step process produces blanks that are incredibly scratch resistant and durable.
Once the rod was finished, I put a line on it. The line shot like an arrow. This rod is a pleasure to cast.
The back story is more important. 18 year old Logan Wood was a huge fly fisherman. I met him while he worked at a local restaurant. His love of fly fishing prompted me to “tip” him two fly outfits over the course of six months. One rod was an Epic 586 S2, I built.
Late last year, I asked if he would be interested in learning to build a fly rod. I selected the 690 graphene, so I could compare it to other 6 weights.
We discussed the build and he selected the thread color. He was stoked to get started.
The kit arrived on Monday, January 17. The previous Thursday, Logan went duck hunting with some friends. After he dropped them off, he never arrived back at the access area. They found his boat circling and some debris in the water.
Last weekend, Logan’s brother, Jackson, and I completed the rod and inscribed Logan’s name on it. My hope is, this rod will be a keepsake for Logan’s family. It’s part of his legacy.
I'm very pleased with the rod, it has the same crisp light feel in the hand as my 590C and handles short casts nicely while having that little bit more power for handling wind and larger flies. I was worried that the "faster and stiffer" graphene addition might have made the 690G rather more powerful than the 690C which I really like. Not so, it feels even lighter with the fibreglass insert but not terribly classy reel Seat - an improvement on old heavy full metal version on such a light rod) and seems to have the same delicacy up close.
The rod construction and materials were excellent as usual - although I couldn't master the transfers and dumped them after finally getting the backing off only to find they had no adhesive and so wouldn't stay in place on the rod. I like the low shine finish and black guides but regret that there was no cigar grip option, just the full wells (which is fine).
Now on my third Epic kit, having built 590c and 690c previously. Just about to finish this new 690g. The rod is beautiful and I cannot wait to take it on its maiden voyage. Can’t say enough about the quality of the kit. Just as advertised, everything you need to build a quality rod is included. I don’t expect this will be the last kit I purchase. They are fun to build and even more fun to fish.
The build went surprisingly well, really well packed and after a few practice wraps it all came together. Just had it out today for a test run and I'm blown away with just how good it is to use. My new favorite rod, pinpoint accuracy, powered through wind and beautiful presentation. I love it
Overall experience was excellent from speed of delivery (informed of progress every step of the way), quick answer to questions and quality of product. Instructions easy to follow and kit well set up for first time rod builders. Whilst my rod might not be 100% perfect on close inspection it is Epic. Well done Epic I am very very happy with my purchase. Cork handle excellent, blank excellent, guides excellent, rod tube excellent, rod bag a little tight for full wells grip but otherwise one of the best I have. Overall excellent. Five stars.
