Filleting a Trout

We've been doing it wrong all along!

While we're all for catch and release, many anglers do take a fish now and again, if you do it's nice to be able to avoid any wastage of this precise resource.

We stumbled across this great clip from RedCastle Outdoors.  In almost 40 years of fly fishing we had never seen a fish filleted precisely this way - so simple, and now that we see it - so logical!

Superb!

If you don’t cut through the back, you can create an intact deboned trout (vs 2 separate fillets) than you can stuff and wrap.

Nice to see you using maybe my most favorite knife ever made. I have one since I bought it in 1965. It’s not only the right size for trout but it the right size for other things too. Be it in the kitchen or field dressing a deer in the fall. Oh, and there is nothing wrong with keeping a trout or two for the table from time to time.

Surely the best way is;
1 Buy / build an Epic rod
2 Use it to catch a fish on a Bob Wyatt fly
3 Then watch the video

How to Cast Tight Loops - Fly Fishing & Fly Casting

Casting tight loops are is actually pretty simple in theory. Line and loop shape are primarily dictated by the path the fly rod tip takes during the cast and after the stop. The line does not follow the rod tip exactly - but for the purpose of this exercise that’s what we need to be thinking about.

Having seen a few tails and created more than my fair share - most entirely involuntarily - I think it best to keep things relatively simple. After-all, we're all about fly fishing rather than any in-depth analysis of casting physics.
Fly fishing and certainly fly casting is most certainly the sport of exceptions and in order to attempt to explain anything in fly casting you tend to have to generalise  -and that’s what i’m about to do.
